To the Editor:Re “Don’t Blame Robots for Low Wages,” by Paul Krugman (column, March 15):Why would anyone blame robots for anything? We invent the machines for the express purpose of doing work faster, better and more safely than we can ourselves. The relatively few number of coal miners, factory workers and longshoremen who remain on the job need quite sophisticated skills to keep all the wonderful machines in production. Many of the workers displaced by machines end up in service sectors of the economy, and these are notoriously underrepresented by labor unions. As Mr. Krugman points ou t, that’s where you can find blame for low wages.
